Ballad is owned by the Salén family and was acquired in 1962 by Sven Salén. In the late 40's and early 50's the interest in ocean racing increased in Sweden because of the around Gotland race. It took different yachts than Swedish designers were used to, so ambtious yachtsmen looked elsewhere, Sparkman & Stephens designed Ballad, or Anna Marina, as she was first called. She was built at the Plym yard at Neglinge, Stockholm for Hedborg, K. E. gen. konsul, Belgien Bryssel.

"Rod Stephens concurred with Olin that this motor-sailer is perhaps the best cruising boat to come off the S&S boards. Built for a Swedish client at the Bengt Plym yard in 1950 and equipped with a tall rig, she proved almost embarrassingly fast, slipping past even some of S&S's own European racers." from Sparkman & Stephens designs, The best of the best.
